Resumen:

El escrito es el resultado de una revisión selectiva de la bibliografía sobre la vida y obra de Juan Manuel Cagigal, para la conmemoración del Bicentenario de su nacimiento (Barcelona, 10-08-1803). Conocedor del análisis matemático de su época, tuvo el mérito de fundar los estudios matemáticos y enseñar los conocimientos de su tiempo en Venezuela. Por diez años (1831-1841) dirigió la Academia de Matemáticas, en la cual se formaron los primeros ingenieros venezolanos, que tendrían gran influencia en el desarrollo de la ingeniería del siglo diecinueve y en la fundación del Colegio de Ingenieros de Venezuela (1861). Su ciclo vital terminó en Yaguaraparo el 10-02-1856.

Abstract:

This paper presents the results of a bibliographic revision on the life and work of Juan Manuel Cagigal, motivated by his 200th birthday (Barcelona, 08-10-1803). Well versed in the mathematical analysis of his time he is considered the founder of mathematical studies in Venezuela, and recognized for transmitting his knowledge at the Academy of mathematics, of which he was director during the period 1831-1841. The first venezuelan engineers wer formed at this academy and these professionals were responsible for the further development of this discipline during the XIXth century, as well as the establishment of the Colegio de Ingenieros of Venezuela in 1861. His vital cycle ended in Yaguaraparo (State of Anzoategui) on February 10th, 1856.
