Breves comentarios sobre la vida y obra matemática de Juan Manuel Cagigal

Resumen:

Este ensayo contribuye a la conmemoración de los doscientos años del nacimiento de Juan Manuel Cagigal (1803 -56), considerado como el fundador de los estudios de matemáticas en Venezuela. Recibió su formación matemática en París, a la sazón el centro mundial en esa disciplina. Cagigal se compenetró allá directamente con las obras de Cauchy, Lacroix, Poisson, Laplace y otros. De regreso en Venezuela, Cagigal ganó la voluntad del gobierno para que fundase la Academia de Matemáticas en 1831, de la cual fue su director hasta 1841. Cagigal tuvo relevante actividad política, periodística y diplomática. Sólo tres de sus obras matemáticas se conservan, la más importante de las cuales es una memoria sobre integrales definidas.

Abstract:

This essay has been written to commemorate the two hundredth anniversary of the birth of Juan Manuel Cagigal (1803-56), who established the first institution of higher mathematical learning in Venezuela and made the first serious contributions on the subject in this country. He acquired his mathematical training in Paris, by then the foremost centre in the field. He was thus directly induced the government to found in 1831 the «Academia de Matemáticas» and became its director until 1841. Cagigal was also active in politics, journalism and diplomacy. Only three mathematical works of Cagigal are extant, the most important is a memoir on definite integrals.
